When you’re using a $1000+ MacBook, you really shouldn’t expect to see distorted images and lines on the screen. The flickering screen on a MacBook can be difficult to diagnose, and while it could indicate a hardware issue, some simple troubleshooting steps may be sufficient.

The following steps may help you fix a flickering picture on-screen rather than putting up with it:

  • Macbook restarting
  • Checking macOS for the latest updates
  • Turning off automatic graphics switching
  • Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on MacBook
  • Resetting your NVRAM/PRAM

To properly maintain your Mac, however, you can use Mac Optimizer Pro software. The best Mac cleaner and optimizer, and automatically apply the appropriate fixes to your Mac. But, first, stick to this article.

Although this guide won’t fix a hardware issue, it can assist you with recovery if your MacBook screen keeps flickering because of software problems. Follow it, and you will get the cure.

Restart your MacBook

If you wish to solve any unusual problems with your MacBook (like a flickering screen), then restarting it is a good place to start. A quick restart clears your Mac’s running memory and is easy to do. This could fix a blinking screen caused by an underlying software issue.

  • Click the Apple logo in the top left corner to begin. Then, select the Restart option
  • If you want macOS to reopen your currently open windows when you restart, then click the Reopen windows when logging back in checkbox. Alternately, you can reboot your Mac by selecting Restart.

Make sure you have the latest macOS updates

It is common for Apple to release new macOS updates containing important bug fixes and feature updates. Keeping your MacBook up-to-date will help fix Mac screen flickering bugs like this one. If you don’t keep it updated, you should check for and install any available macOS updates.

Back up your Mac using Time Machine, even if it is not necessary. When you encounter problems installing a major system update, you may be able to restore your computer to the older version of macOS using your Time Machine backup.

  • Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu under the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen to check for new updates.
  • Next, select the Software Update option from the System Preferences menu.
  • After that, Mac will automatically search for updates. If an update is available, click Update Now to begin the download and installation process. It may take a while to finish.
  • Restart your Mac when the update is complete. The update will begin to install once you restart.

Turn off automatic graphics switching

A MacBook Pro with a standalone graphics chip might use two separate GPUs to provide graphics output. A standalone chip might be able to handle tasks such as gaming or video rendering, while an integrated chip might be able to handle the basics (such as web browsing or word processing).

Automatic graphics switching is designed to help save power and maximize battery life by reducing overall power consumption. This may also cause random MacBook Pro screen flickering, so if you are unable to diagnose the problem, you can turn off automatic graphics to see if that helps.

How to disable automatic switching between graphics:

  1. Go to the Apple icon in the menu bar, and then select System Preferences from the menu
  2. Open System Preferences and select Battery. From the Battery menu, select the Battery option.
  3. Disable this feature by unchecking Automatic graphics switching.

Reset the System Management Controller

MacBook’s System Management Controller (or SMC) is a low-level chip that provides a variety of power-related functions. The application allows you to sleep and wake up your Mac, charge your battery, switch between different graphics modes, and more.

If there is a problem with your SMC, problems (such as a flickering screen) can occur. Fortunately, you can easily reset your MacBook’s SMC, which can fix the problem. However, you can also use the Mac Optimizer Pro tool, which will directly tell you about these small errors.

Resetting the SMC on a MacBook with an Apple T2 security chip

To reset the SMC on your Mac with an Apple T2 chip, follow these instructions.

  1. You need to switch off your MacBook and disconnect it from its power adapter to reset the SMC. Hold the Control, Alt, and Shift keys on your keyboard together for at least seven seconds and then press the power button (while also holding the other keys).
  2. Keeping all four keys pressed for at least 7 seconds, release them
  3. As soon as you’re ready, press the power button to bring your MacBook back to life. If you followed the instructions correctly, your SMC chip should be reset.

How to reset the SMC on an older MacBook (pre-2018)

Apple T2 security chips are not installed in Macbooks released before 2018. Alternatively, if your MacBook is missing this chip, you can use these instructions to reset your SMC.

  1. Disconnect the power adapter from your MacBook and turn it off. As soon as the MacBook is switched off, hold down Shift, Control, and Option
  2. When you’ve selected the three keys, hold down the power button. Keep the four keys pressed for at least 10 seconds before releasing them.
  3. Your SMC should now be reset. Next, Restart your Mac.

Set your NVRAM or PRAM chip to default

You can use NVRAM (non-volatile random access memory) to store important system information on your MacBook. Things like the current date and time or the graphics configuration are stored here. The same functions are handled by the PRAM chip on older PowerPC MacBooks.

  1. To reset either your NVRAM or your PRAM chips (depending on your MacBook), shut down your Mac gadget first
  2. As soon as the MacBook is switched off, press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys to start it up. Then release the keys after about 20 seconds.
  3. At this point, your MacBook will restart with the NVRAM/PRAM chip reset

Besides this, for proper optimization and cleaning of redundant files and data, you can use Mac Optimizer Pro software. This tool easily takes care of the MacBook and other Mac devices. It is the best Mac cleaner and optimizer.
